Palestinians attempt to remove injured journalist Hazem Rajab from the remains of a car where Palestinian journalists Hamza Al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya were killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike near Rafah, south Gaza, January 7, 2024. Journalist Hazem Rajab was also badly injured but survived the attack. Al-Dahdouh was the son of the AlJazeera chief correspondent in Gaza, Wael Al-Dahdouh, who already lost members of his close family in another Israeli strike. According to the Gaza government's media office, 109 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza by Israeli colonial forces since October 7, making it one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists in modern history. Since October 7, the death toll from Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza has killed at least 22,835, 70 percent of them women and children, with thousands more missing under the rubble in many areas.
The Activestills collective was established in 2005 by a group of documentary photographers, out of a strong conviction that photography is a vehicle for social change. We believe in the power of images to shape public attitudes and to raise awareness on issues that are generally absent from public discourse.
We view ourself as part of the struggle against all forms of oppression, racism, and violations of the basic right to freedom. We do work on various topics, including the grassroots movement and the popular struggle against the Israeli occupation, women’s rights, immigration, asylum-seekers, social justice, the siege on Gaza, and housing rights inside Israel.
