Members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish group Neturei Karta burn the Israeli flag during their 77th annual march mourning the existence of the State of Israel in the Me'a She'arim neighborhood of Jerusalem, May 1st, 2025. The mourners wore sackcloth, a biblical symbol of deep mourning, carried Palestinian flags and burned Israeli flags as part of their protest. Neturei Karta believe that the Jewish people are religiously obligated to remain in exile until the coming of the Messiah, and therefore see the modern State of Israel as a betrayal of the Torah. During the demonstration, riot police entered the neighborhood, attacked protesters, and arrested one participant. At one point, a police officer attempted to burn a Palestinian flag but was stopped by colleagues. Protesters threw garbage bags and diapers at police forces that entered the area.
The Activestills collective was established in 2005 by a group of documentary photographers, out of a strong conviction that photography is a vehicle for social change. We believe in the power of images to shape public attitudes and to raise awareness on issues that are generally absent from public discourse.
We view ourself as part of the struggle against all forms of oppression, racism, and violations of the basic right to freedom. We do work on various topics, including the grassroots movement and the popular struggle against the Israeli occupation, women’s rights, immigration, asylum-seekers, social justice, the siege on Gaza, and housing rights inside Israel.
